NOTE ON CONFIDENTIALITY
Confidentiality and Your Privacy
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship. It fosters trust and allows you to freely explore sensitive topics without fear of judgment or disclosure. You can expect that what we discuss in session remains private.
Informed Consent and Sharing Information
Upon starting therapy, you'll receive a written copy of my confidential disclosure agreement. It outlines the parameters of confidentiality and your rights. In general, I cannot share information about our sessions with anyone without your written consent. However, there are specific exceptions mandated by law and professional ethics where confidentiality may need to be breached.
Exceptions to Confidentiality
Suspected Child, Dependent Adult, or Elder Abuse: I am legally required to report any suspicion of abuse to the appropriate authorities.
Threat of Harm to Others: If I believe you pose a serious threat of harm to someone else, I am obligated to notify the police and inform the intended victim.
Self-Harm: If you express intentions to harm yourself, I will work with you to ensure your safety. If you're unable to cooperate, I may need to take further steps to protect you, as permitted by law.
It's important to understand these exceptions beforehand so you can make informed decisions about sharing information in therapy. If you have concerns about confidentiality, please feel free to discuss them with me.
